State of Texas Motorcycle Laws and Registration Information

Safety Helmet
Required by law under age 21. Over age 21, riders are not required to wear a helmet with proof of successful completion of rider training or $10,000 of medical insurance covering injuries resulting from a motorcycle accident
State Funded Rider Ed - Available for all eligible applicants-required under 18
Eye Protection - Not required
Daytime Use of Headlight - Required unless motorcycle is manufactured prior to 1975
Passenger Seat - Required if carrying a passenger
Passenger Footrest - Not required
Passenger Age Restriction - None

Registering Your Bike
To register a motorcycle in the State of Texas, you simply follow the same procedures as you do when registering a car.

To register your motorcycle, you will need the following:

• Proof of ownership
• A safety inspection certificate obtained at an official inspection station
• Proof of your identity
• Proof of insurance
